Lose yourself in the history of St Malo…

St Malo is the historic town on the Northern coast of Brittany, easily accessible from the UK by ferry. As well as the ‘Intra-Muros’ Medieval walled town area, it boasts stunning beaches and two beautiful islands, ‘Grand Be’ and ‘Petit Be’ which can be visited on foot at low tide.

The colourful history of the town includes tales of pirates and smuggling, as well as being almost destroyed in the Second World War. Before you visit, we recommend reading Anthony Doerr’s 2014 award-winning novel, All the Light We Cannot See, set in St Malo during wartime and following the intertwining stories of a young French girl and a German soldier.

The spectacular Château de St-Malo was built in the 15th and 16th centuries by the dukes of Brittany, but now houses the Musée d’Histoire de St-Malo. As well as the cultural history to discover inside, we’ve also head that there are stunning views from the top of the building, overlooking the old town.

After a busy day exploring the city, the beach – Plage de Bon Secours – is the perfect location to wind down and catch the sunset. As well as its own sea-water swimming pool, there are views of the surrounding beaches and the city’s two islands – ‘Grand Be’ and ‘Petit Be’.
